the cold winds are rising.

It's time for the next category for my best of 2011 series. Allow me to show you which TV shows warmed my heart, entertained me or gave me the shivers the last 350 days.

1. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
I never would have imagined how much this TV show would mean to me, when I first started to watch it a couple of years ago. In fact I was like, what's the hype about this show, I don't get it, I hate sitcoms with fake laughter, and it isn't even funny. But I kept watching, and within season 02 Ted & Co. got me. And then came a time when I was devastated, last year in winter. I had no internet, yet in my new flat and that was the time when this TV show literally saved my live. I kept rewatching season 01 and 02 over and over again, and it made me smile when I thought I couldn't smile anymore. And oh boy, I don't even want to imagine what it will be like, when this, somewhen, eventually comes to an end. In 2011 we had the end of season 06 (which was in my opinion better than the seasons before with all those awesome guest stars from other favourite TV shows like SIX FEET UNDER, DEXTER or LOST) and the first part of season 07 which is more dramatic than this show ever was, but I dig it. I have seen people on the internet mocking about they finally want to know who the mother of Ted's kids is, but I am just thinking, this show has never been about the mother in the first place, but about this awesome friendship between five awesome characters I fell madly in love with.

2. TRUE BLOOD
Sexy, dirty, juicy True Blood is just perfect for the sticky summer season. And season 04 for me has been the most hilarious one. I just love how Alan Ball does not fear to make an episode cheesy and how he just doesn't take himself too serious. I also liked how Dr. Skarsgard can be both the cruel and reckless killer and the poor little bunny you just want to squeeze and cuddle. But I was also a bit disappointed about Lafayette's Character, he was way more funny in the earlier seasons and this time he was pretty boring, almost no swearing and this hair-do...um..I dunno.

3. GAME OF THRONES
Again a series I didn't think I could like, all this dark age fantasy stuff did never attract me. But bored Simone needed something new to entertain her, and Game of Thrones seemed to be the new shit. So I gave it a try and i have to admit that I often caught myself not paying attention and skipping back to key scenes I missed. And like on every other TV show I need some time to identify with the characters, which is the main aspect that keeps me going with a show (seems plausible, right?) However, it didn't take long for me to feel sympathy for the House of Stark and especially Arya, the smallest of Eddard's and Catelyn's children, a smart little girl, willing to fight like a soldier. Another great character is Tyrion Lannister played by Peter Dinklage, who won a lot of prices for this role, i guess, not surprising for me, as he does a great job. Anyway, Game of Thrones is full rolling heads and other body parts, full of scheming and full of ruthless characters (especially that bitch Cersei) that make you want to slap their faces or wish other characters will have a bloody revenge on them. I can't wait for season 02! Four months to go!

4. NEW GIRL
Another comedy show. Zooey Deschanel. I mentioned before that I never really knew what to think about her. But boredom must have played a big role, too, here, that I thought I give this one a chance. And what can I say, from the very beginning the episodes where amazing, and the writers set it on a very high entertainment level. This season isn't halfway through and I am curious if they can keep that level up.

5. AMERICAN HORROR STORY
Horror Stories? Yes, please! But this one's a very weird one, right from the start. It's actually not even scary but it's mentally challenging its characters AND its audience. It takes a while for the viewer to figure out, what is real, who is really alive and who is actually dead. Who is using who, to achive what? And why is there this sympathy for a person who is actually a scumbag (yes, Tate, I am talking about you!) This week will be the season finale, and I am excited what will happen next, and what a further season might bring.

I am sure, people might say now: "Simone! What about Breaking Bad?! It was so amazing, how can you not even mention it here?" It is simply because I haven't watched season 04, yet and didn't even finish season 03. I love Walter & Co. and I love how fucked up this series is, but I watched season 01 and 02 in a row and when I started number 03 it was just pretty exhausting and I fell asleep while watching, so I decided to "take a break" on Breaking Bad. And then all these series started at the same time, Dexter (which was pretty disappointing, but I already expected this) Misfits, The Walking Dead, New Girl, American Horror Story and HIMYM. So I am going to recommence when there is a tv-show drought, probably somewhen in february, and I am pretty sure, I will like it.

p.s. I know what I said about the length of the entries, but oh well..

I PLANNED :: to make brandy punch (Feuerzangenbowle) next weekend

reality drift.

I know you could hardly wait for the next issue of my best of 2011 series, couldn't you? Today let's talk about motion pictures. It is barely possible for me to watch all the current movies i am interested in. Although there are fabulous online streaming opportunities these days, i rarely find the right time, where i can concentrate enough to watch the whole movie through. I don't know what it is, but basically it proceeds like illustrated in this graphic.

But the movies i am highly interested in, I try to watch almost exclusively at the theatre. And it turns out that my favourite ones of this year I indeed saw all of them in the theatre, with one exception (Blue Valentine, that wasn't in the program when i already desperately wanted to watch it.)

So here is the list of my favourite movies of 2011 or should I say, all movies that deserve more attention than Melancholia. I didn't make a wall of shame for movies that have been released in 2011, but Melancholia would definitely be on it, but that is already enough talk about an irrelevant movie.

some short thoughts about the movies:

BEGINNERS: hilarious, philosophical, sad and elusively congenial oh..and EWAN MCGREGOR!
BIUTIFUL: Javier Bardem playing a character that is both vulnerable and strong at the same time. In my opinion his most convincing and impressing role.
THE TREE OF LIFE: imposing pictures and an impressive performance by the young actor Hunter McCracken.
BLACK SWAN: DARREN ARONOFSKY. 'Nough said!
THE FUTURE: refreshing as one would expect another movie by quirky Miranda July.
WEEKEND: so realistic, so teasing, so heartbreaking!
BLUE VALENTINE: ouch ouch, ugh...uff...I don't know what to say.

I READ ::  A MONSTER CALLS by Patrick Ness
I ATE :: possibly the best spread ever invented (already empty)
I DRANK :: Christmas Bubble Tea (not recommendable)
I THOUGHT :: it is ridiculously warm for december
I LIKED :: that i finally finished my TRUE BLOOD fangirl bag
I DISLIKED :: that poster incident
I LEARNED :: to not let things bother me for to long
I PLANNED :: an O.C. California marathon
I BOUGHT ::  two new sweaters and a new blouse

raconte-moi une histoire.

It is the end of the year and time to look back to what treasures 2011 brought to us. today I will start with the musical treats and the following weeks I will enlighten you with my favourite movies, tv series and books of 2011. all in all, I can already say that it was a fruitful year from every point of view!

So here i'll display my favourite records of the year, music from 2010 i listened to a lot this year, and music from artists i expected a lot of, but got a bit disappointed. those i put on the wall of shame. ;)

Some words about the records:

AUSTRA :: Feel it break
With her unique voice Katie Stelmanis, together with her canadian mates, creates something very new, something i haven't heard in that way. This is exactly what i need, and I also think this is the reason why they grew so big in such a short time. I love how they combine dark melodies with catchy pop tunes and still don't sound ordinary. For me this was without doubt the best record of the year.

ACTIVE CHILD :: You are all I see
This one took a while for me to like as a whole record. In the beginning I only picked out several outstanding songs, but listened to them excessively. But meanwhile I learnt to love the whole record, especially "Playing House" that features "How To Dress Well". I thought it was so cheesy, but now I love it! The term "unique" also fits very well with what Pat Grossi and his friends create under the name "Active Child".

WYE OAK :: Civilian
It is incredible how much warmth this record, ney, this band, delivers, with every one of their records, imagining they only consist of two people. But here, too, i needed some time to get used to the sound. I think it is edgier than the ancestor, whose songs harmonised a lot better. But with every listen I learnt to love this release as well. On stage, the band showed a very congenial character.

WILD BEASTS :: Smother
Another almost classical falsetto voice just like Pat Grossi from Active Child. Not many people like this, I can comprehend. But this album shows so much passion that it really grew on me. I would love to see them play live, but haven't had the chance, yet since they didn't play in Munich this year. For shame!

ZOLA JESUS :: Conatus
Last year I got into Zola Jesus via NME marking her as an artist to be watched for 2011 (or something like that) putting her on a sampler with 49 other artists, and for me she was outstanding and I wanted to hear more from her. But then i saw the video for "Night" which is still an incredible song, but for me it was so embarrassing serving all the stereotypes of gothic music. So I left that EP behind. And this year Nika is back with her new full album and I decide to give her a new chance, and that was a really good decision. The album is catchier than her first releases which had a much edgier sound but for me, writing catchy tunes seems a lot more difficult than just to create something that most people would find hard to listen to.

About the WALL OF SHAME: None of these albums are really bad. But as i mentioned i expected a lot, for example the M83 record. In my opinion everything above 12 tracks is too much for a long player record. And Mr. Anthony Gonzalez just overdid it. Besides "Midnight City" there is no other track that pokes out, but at least this guy never runs out of ideas when it comes to naming his songs, haha. Nevertheless I am very much looking forward to the concert he will be playing in March next year, here in Munich.

My 10 favourite tracks this year are:

Usually I don't pay that much attention to remixes, but this year some of them really got me, and some of them were even better, than the original versions. These are my favourites:

And then, of course, there were some concerts. Not many as usual, in Munich, but some memorable gigs were among them like Wye Oak or Austra whom, in fact,  I have seen twice this year, but the most special two concerts were EVENING HYMNS playing a secret gig for Hauskonzerte.com , there were maybe 30 people (i'm so bad at valuation) in an abandoned house and so it was quite intimate and intense but see for yourself  and then there were ESBEN AND THE WITCH, with probably the same number of attendies, which was in one way a shame, of course, but in the other, it is kinda nice if a concert isn't that crowded. However, the atmosphere was amazing, it was all dark, just a few lights standing on the bottom of the stage and when Rachel Davies started to play that drum I got totally lost. (Unfortunately the quality isn't thaat good, but it kinda delivers what i mean)

Thank you for your attention, ladies and gentleman. And no, the other "best of" entries won't be about the size of a Tolstoy novel.

for the record, so I won't get sued: I used this and  some of this for the collage.

white pony.

dear followers. nostalgia music week comes to an end and it's crowned with a song by the band that had the most influence on my youth. a band that still gives me shivers whilst listening to their music after such a long time. ten years ago a band called DEFTONES released an album called "WHITE PONY" and to me it's the most wonderful, dynamic, disturbing and frightening piece of music i have ever witnessed. true story.

[A -> B] Life

Ladies and Gentlemen, today we actually have a real music video. Enjoy MEWITHOUTYOU!

get excited! because tomorrow the pinnacle of "nostalgia music week" will be revealed!

weekend.

Good to know, that there are still movies, that don't need no massive visual effects, no wagner opus, and still can be convincing. Thank you Andrew Haigh for this splendid movie.

false cathedrals.

This was a tough choice today. My first thought was Coheed and Cambria. But try to find some songs on youtube by a well known band and GEMA will cut your plans. The next band I think about is Criteria. But Criteria is not really a helpful bandname if you are searching for their music. So my choice today is ELLIOTT. Enjoy!

nap on the bow.

Monday, November 7, 2011

i was in the future, yesterday.

I am currently reading this book by Beth Revis called "Across the Universe".

It tells the story of a girl who, together with her mom and dad, gets frozen and put on board of a spaceship called "godspeed" in order to travel for 300 years to a yet unexplored planet, since it will soon be impossible to go on living on planet Earth. But after 250 years she is accidently woken up too early and is faced to living 50 more years on the spaceship before her parents (scientists who are essential for the development of the future civilization on the new planet) are going to be unfrozen. I have read one third of the book, yet and it is surprisingly tense. I assumed it would be cheesy since there is going to be a romance involved. Well, some days ago i discovered the music of BLOUSE, a dream pop band with an 80ies sound who wrote a song called time travel and it fits perfectly to that science fiction topic, which i actually never thought i would enjoy. here's a glimpse of BLOUSE's sound with said song:

presents.

i also wanted to show you the prezzies i got for my birthday. some cool stuff among it!!

crazy ricarda, for example, not only baked some awesome sugar skull cookies (corresponding to the dia de los muertos themed costumes) and rose carrot cake cupcakes, she also managed to obtain a screen print from craig thompson's newest graphic novel "habibi" (which i still do not own, yet, due to a lack of money). my kindergarden friend mia gave me a cute owlish rubber stamp, and so my owl collection expands. also yoko and bernd know me pretty well, so they surprised me with a lip balm hidden in an owl costume. the cool thing about it is, that you can still use the owly as decoration after the lip balm is consumed. and then there are books. and there are books, yet to come! (like habibi) but first some words about these. from my eldery housemate i got a book called "the art of classy impoverishing". i'm not sure if i can still learn something, as i am already classy impoverished, haha. i myself bought two books from the very innovative money present my parents transferred to my bank account. the first one is patrick ness' "a monster calls" i have high expectations to this one, and the way it is illustrated is already pleasing my eyes, big time! can't wait to read it, but i still have to finish another book, before. the second book is "looking for alaska" from john green. this one also has been recommended to me a lot. so i expect something great on this one, too. lots of stuff i can fill my time with, on the forthcoming winter! thanks for all the nice stuff!

the heart is a lonely hunter.

hello! thanks to a friend i was finally able to revive my external hard drive and therefore i could access the music saved on this disc again. i immediately took advantage of this situation and created a new mix on 8tracks! huzzah! as we have arrived in autumn by now, this is a very folky, singer-songwriterish mix.

3. Dark Dark Dark - Something For Myself
4. Holcombe Waller - The Unicorn
5. Gem Club - Spine

those kinds of things.

just watched the new dexter, was about time, i know. already three days since it had aired, man! if there just weren't those lovely migraine attacks that i enjoy so much to waste my time on. well, i kinda expect the new season to be lame, i dunno. the dexter buzz has gone, i guess. but at least i was all "chchchhhchhchhh" about this scene:

oh and i found this:

is this real? i would looove some key lime pie ice cream!

oh and btw: what was this one guy getting killed for? selling fruits?

kryptonite.

Is anyone watching "New Girl" with Zooey Deschanel? I'm still not sure if i like her or not. Sometimes there are people you haven't figured out yet, wether to like them, or not, right? Anywho...I loved this scene.

the deadly swamps of sadness.

i am rewatching one of my childhood favorites "the neverending story" right now. i guess, around this time it was still ok to turn great books into movies and nobody complained. ;) or did they? however, i am enjoying this watch a lot and would like to share some of its great moments here:

Stone Eater!!

Don't let the sadness of the deadly swamps affect you!

I remember i was so afraid of this creature when i was little!

Can you scratch my ear, please, Atreyu?!

The slooooww talking and sneezing Morla!

I know you wanna watch it, too, now! i am also thinking about re-reading the book!

danse macabre.

ever since i've known the the tradition of halloween, i always wanted to disguise and walk around at night and celebrate. the fact that this day also happens to be my birthday makes it even more special. but this tradition only slowly slopped over to german realms, so halloween parties and costumes over here were always kind of lame to me and no one out of my circle of friends ever really felt the same fascination to join and celebrate. but! this year i found my halloween soulmate and right now i am already making plans for a costume. first i thought about dressing as a certain well known character, but i couldn't decide out of too many options, so i made some researches on the web and stumbled upon the term DIA DE LOS MUERTOS. i really love everything about the style and its possible to be a lot more creative and adjustable than with having chosen a certain character. so DIA DE LOS MUERTOS basically is a mexican tradition, celebrated from 31st of october to 2nd of november, similar to the halloween tradition and it looks like this:

so there is about one month time to plan and i already got some ideas. if everything works out as i imagine it, it's going to be awesome!

matrimonium.

two friends of mine got married earlier this year in may. since their wedding took place with only the closest relatives, they wanted to celebrate once more with their friends. the idea was to have a bbq on the riverside, but since all summer long the weather was rather inappropriate, it already seemed to be cancelled. but september decided to overwhelm us with some more sunbeams, so last weekend we had the chance to gather for some munchtime in the evening sun. here are some impressions:

vessels.

i recently signed up with 8tracks.com a website where you can make online mixtapes. and i made two mixes already which is actually one mix split apart in two pieces, since you can only upload 8 tracks per mix, if you don't sign up for the paid version.* while mix one SOME✝HING ▲BOUT WI✝CHES is a bit darker mooded, mix two COSMIC G▲ZE is light fare. enjoy!

* that is a lie. i'm sorry. ;)

Apple Orchard Banana Cat Dance 8663

it's 17 days until the premiere of the new How I Met Your Mother Season (you might have noticed the countdown on the right) and this is a good occasion to show you the 10 reasons why i love this series so much. (ok, i know there are in fact a bazillion reasons why i love this show, but i thought i narrow it down to ten as some of you might already get bored about me talking about this show too much) it was quite a struggle with myself here, to name only ten. ;)

so here it comes. for more memorable awesomeness check this blog to find your favourites.

illusions.

yesterday, me and some friends of mine had our fourth episode of the food experience. since i haven't mentioned it here in detail, here is the basic idea: some friends gather around at each of their homes and one after another cooks their favourite meal. we started it in april and every month someone else had the chance to indulge the others with their favourite yummies. yesterday my friends bernd and yoko were hosting the event and they added the idea that every guest should bring a favourite movie to watch and we were drawing lots to define in what order to watch them. bernd documented the lottery with his camera:

the lots

breathless by jean-luc godard

the fall by tarsem singh

fido by andrew currie

i had to draw the first lot which was tills choice: breathless (à bout de souffle) by jean-luc godard.
then till drew my choice, the fall by tarsem singh. and then we had some more breath left for another movie so laura drew another lot which turned out to be her own choice, fido by andrew currie. after having watched three movies, a classic, a surrealistic one and a zombie comedy we were pretty exhausted so bernds and yokos movies will have to wait for another movie night.

borealis.

as promised, here are the results of the dyeing experiment. the scarf actually turned out to be the best result, when it actually looked crappy while it was still wet.

afterwards i found out, i would've needed to put a wet fabric into the colorbucket (instead of a dry one, like it did. stupid me, never reading the instructions thoroughly) this would probably have brought the gradient coloring. meh. i still like the result, though, but i'll probably start a 2nd attempt soon with some dark blue or lavender color.

for anyone who would like to try it on their own, i link you to a very good tutorial.

M83: Midnight City from Mike Kalinin on Vimeo.

corresponding to the colorful video i had a colorful day, today. yes i finally made it. the dip-dyeing. thanks to ricardas support i dyed some clothes today, no photos from the results, yet, cause the clothes are still drying. at first i was like: meh...not really satisfied, cause i couldn't see any nuances or gradients but the more the clothes dry, the better the result looks! i try to make some pictures during this week.

midnight city.

the last couple of weeks i got a little bit obsessed with pinterest. it's an invite-only website with a similar concept like stumble upon or tumblr. the idea is to create boards and pin interesting inspiring stuff to it and share it to your friends. since there are yet only a few people i know using the website,
i decided to share some interesting stuff from time to time here on this blog. the first share is going
to be from the category "products i love".

1) pencils made out of recycled newspaper. not only environmental friendly but also looking really nice. they can be purchased via abesmarket.com

2) an incredibly comfy looking blanket made out of the thickest yarn i have ever seen. image the needles you would need to knit this kind of yarn. unfortunately i wasn't able to find out the original source of that one.

3) tea cups made out of paper mache. i'd really like to serve my guests some tea in those. here is a brief tutorial on how to make them on your own.

4) a lamp made out of paper houses. i'd love to replace my lamps with one of these. more of those great ideas can be found in this blog.

additionally: my pinterest account is linked in this blog on the right side in the section "me elsewhere".
if you like an invite just contact me.
